Knap opened and the window is empty

Knap has no notes of its own; it reads a folder you choose. Press ⌘, to open Settings and click Choose next to Notes folder, then pick any folder holding .md or .txt files. macOS asks for permission the first time, and Knap remembers the folder afterwards.

There is no icon in the Dock

Knap lives in the menu bar instead. Press ⌥Space from any app to bring it forward, and again to hide it. The menu bar icon has Show, New Note, Settings, and Quit. You can change the shortcut or hide the menu bar icon in Settings.

The shortcut does nothing

Another app is probably holding ⌥Space, which is the default for Alfred, Raycast, and LaunchBar too. macOS gives the keypress to one of them without telling either. Pick a different shortcut in Settings.

A folder is missing notes

Knap reads .md and .txt files, skips anything beginning with a dot, and skips whatever is in the ignore list in Settings. That list starts with .git, .obsidian, .junk, Trash, and .trash. A bare name there matches at any depth; a path matches that one place.

I edited a note in another app

Knap notices immediately and reloads it. If you had unsaved edits in Knap at the same time, it keeps yours and shows a banner saying the file changed underneath; saving overwrites the version on disk.

Where are my notes?

Exactly where they were. Knap never moves or copies them, and writes plain Markdown back into the same folder. Deleting Knap leaves every note untouched.
